Welcome to the UCSF Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery’s website dedicated to its ongoing research endeavors.
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is committed to providing dental students, oral & maxillofacial surgery residents, and faculty with the support and resources to fully investigate the field of oral & maxillofacial surgery. We are housed within the UCSF School of Dentistry and are comprised of 15 full-time faculty conducting basic science and clinical research. Spread across our various sites, there are ample opportunities to explore research questions in our field. Our faculty conduct patient care and research at UCSF Parnassus, UCSF Mission Bay, San Francisco VA Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and Highland Hospital.
The department is home to the residency training program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition to the dual degree (DDS/MD) track, there is also a combined residency and PhD program for interested applicants. As you explore this site, you will find three separate areas of projects: basic science, translational, and clinical research.
The basic science research within the department is focused heavily on pain research through the Levine Lab.
The translational research is focused on tissue engineering and regeneration with the majority of the work coming from faculty at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.
Clinical research is conducted across all of our sites and focuses on research questions in the areas of:
- Maxillofacial trauma
- Craniofacial surgery
- Benign pathology
- Malignant pathology
- Reconstruction
- Dental implants
- Temporomandibular joint disorders
- Sleep medicine/surgery
- Surgical education
